Step 10 — The Dyebath — A Step-by-Step Guide
This is where theory becomes practice. The dyebath is the central act of natural dyeing: coaxing colour out of plant or animal material and into fibre. The process is broadly the same regardless of what dye you’re using, so once you’ve done it once, you have a template you’ll return to every time.
What You’ll Need
- A dedicated dye pot (stainless steel or enamel — never aluminium with tannin-based dyes, as it reacts; avoid using cooking pots again after dyeing)
- Scales accurate to 1 gram
- A long-handled stirring rod or spoon (dedicated to dyeing)
- Your dye material — plant, insect, or extract
- Pre-scoured and pre-mordanted fibre or fabric (see Step 05 — Natural Fibres and Fabric Preparation and Step 06 — Mordants — Making Colour Stick)
- Water — soft water produces cleaner colour; hard water can dull some dyes
- Gloves and an apron
Step 1 — Prepare the Dye Liquor
For plant material, simmer the dye source in water for 30–60 minutes to extract its pigment. The water will change colour noticeably. Strain out the plant material through a sieve or cheesecloth — you want a clear dye liquor, not a soup with bits in it. For powdered extracts, simply dissolve in hot water according to the supplier’s instructions.
Cochineal and other insect dyes dissolve directly in warm water; a small splash of acid (cream of tartar or a capful of white vinegar) improves take-up on protein fibres.
Step 2 — Enter the Fibre
Add your wet, mordanted fibre to the dye liquor. Wet is important — dry fibre entering a hot bath can absorb colour unevenly, creating blotchiness. Soak your fibre in warm water for at least 20 minutes before it goes in.
The weight ratio of dye material to dry fibre weight (WOF — weight of fibre) is expressed as a percentage. A good starting point: 50–100% WOF for most plant dyes (so 100g of dry fibre needs 50–100g of dry plant material); 5–10% WOF for concentrated insect dye powder. These are guidelines, not rules — you’ll adjust with experience.
Step 3 — Heat Gently
Raise the temperature slowly over 30–45 minutes to a simmer. For wool: stay below 85–90°C and avoid stirring vigorously (felting risk). For silk: a lower, gentler simmer around 70–80°C preserves lustre. For cotton and linen: you can go a little higher, up to 95°C.
Hold at the simmering temperature for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally and gently to ensure even exposure.
Step 4 — Cool Slowly
Turn off the heat and allow the pot to cool gradually with the fibre still in it. Sudden temperature changes shock protein fibres and can cause uneven colour or, in wool’s case, felting. Ideally, let it sit until the water is hand-warm before removing the fibre.
Step 5 — Rinse and Finish
Lift the fibre out gently, squeeze (don’t wring), and rinse in water of a similar temperature to the dyebath. Work your way down to cool water over two or three rinses. If the rinse water runs nearly clear, the excess unfixed dye has washed away. Hang to dry away from direct sunlight.
Reading the Results
A deeply exhausted bath (nearly colourless) means the fibre absorbed most of the available dye — efficient and even uptake. A still-strong bath means either the fibre was saturated before all the dye could bond, or the dyeing temperature was too low. You can often dye a second batch at a paler shade with the leftover bath (exhaust dyeing).
